Winside reaches first subdistrict final since 2001
The Winside boys basketball team earned its first subdistrict semifinal win since 2001 with a 58-41 win over Emerson-Hubbard in D2-3 subdistrict play Tuesday at Stanton High School.
The 16-8 Wildcats built a 12-point halftime lead and used a key 15-4 third-quarter run to take control of the game and advance to the subdistrict finals for the first time since beating Wakefield 56-53 in the Class D-1 subdistrict semifinals back in 2001.
Brandon Watters led three Wildcats in double figures with 22 points, JaShaun Vyborny added 19 and Dylan Brogren put in 13. Caleb Kampa and Billy Chappell each had two points.
Winside meets Humphrey St. Francis in Thursday’s 7 p.m. final at Stanton High School. The winner plays the D2-4 subdistrict champion on Tuesday at a time and location yet to be determined.
