Winside finishes fourth in L&C tourney

Winside came away with a fourth-place finish in the Lewis & Clark Conference tournament, losing to eventual champion Ponca in the semifinals and falling to Hartington-Newcastle in the third-place match.

In Monday’s semifinal at Wakefield, Ponca dominated the Wildcats with a 25-18, 25-10, 25-7 win. Bargstadt led the Winside effort with nine kills, Olander had four and Topp, Home Cummins and Victoria Buresh each had two. Wolfe had 12 assists and Behmer had seven. Olander had 17 digs, Bargstadt had 15 digs and three blocks, and Brogren and Wolfe each had six digs.

In Tuesday’s consolation match at Laurel, Hartington-Newcastle came back to win a best-of-three match over the Wildcats, 14-25, 25-19, 25-22. Bargstadt had eight kills to lead Winside, while Hope Cummins added five, Olander had three and Behmer, Brogren and Topp each had two. Wolfe had 12 assists and Behmer added six. Hope Cummins had seven blocks and Bargstadt added five. Defensively, Bargstadt had 16 digs, Olander had 15, Brogren and Hope Cummins each had 10, Wolfe had nine and Behmer had seven.

Winside hosts Lindsay Holy Family in their regular-season finale on Friday.
