Wildcats fall to St. Cloud in soccer action
Alexis Strothers scored her first goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as Wayne State College dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Cloud State in NSIC action Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
St. Cloud State opened the scoring in the 14th minute as Hannah Marion received a cross from Kylie Cleary for the early 1-0 lead.
Alexis Strothers missed on a penalty kick in the 31st minute after Hanna Knight was fouled in the box, but she redeemed herself two minutes later with a header off a Lauren Fleming corner kick to mae it 1-1.
St. Cloud took the lead for good late in the first half on a Monica Majeski goal off a Brooke Bares corner kick, then got an insurance goal late in the second half to finish off the 3-1 win.
St. Cloud State finished the contest with a 16-10 edge in shots and 7-1 in shots on goal. The Huskies held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks while Wayne State was called for nine fouls compared to seven on St. Cloud State.
Strothers led the Wildcats offensively, scoring her first goal of the season and adding three shots. Christina Stasi and Rylie Wehner each added two shots. Rachel Grisham made four saves in goal.
Wayne State (3-7-5, 2-6-4 NSIC) hosts Minnesota Duluth in a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday.
