Wildcats drop matchups at MSU Moorhead

The Wayne State men’s and women’s basketball teams both came home empty-handed from a weekend road trip, as both teams dropped games Saturday at MSU Moorhead.

In the women’s game, Maggie Schulte drained a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime, but MSU Moorhead rallied in the extra session and outlasted the Wildcats 86-84.

Maggie Lowe sparked the Wildcats in the first quarter, scoring nine straight points on back-to-back treys and an old-fashioned three-point play to put Wayne State in front 17-9 at the 2:31 mark of the first quarter.

MSUM went on a 14-1 run to end the quarter, however, and put the Dragons ahead 23-18 after one quarter.

Wayne State trailed most of the second quarter, but tied the score at 30-30 on a pair of Schulte free throws with 2:43 to go in the half, but the Dragons responded and ended the half with a 35-32 lead.

A late third-quarter scoring surge gave Moorhead their first double-digit lead of the night at 51-41 and the Dragons closed the quarter with a 56-47 advantage. They pushed the lead to 64-51 with 7:42 to play and still led 71-63 with 2:36 to play when the Wildcats stormed back.

Schulte and Kacie O’Connor hit back-to-back 3’s to trim the Dragon lead to 71-69. After a MSUM basket, Schulte hit another trey to cut the lead to 73-72 with 9.3 remaining.

MSU Moorhead’s Drew Sannes made two free throws with 4.9 to play giving the Dragons a 75-72 lead, but Schulte took the inbounds pass from Maggie Lowe and canned a 3-pointer from the right wing as time expired to send the game into overtime at 75-75.

Andrea Larson and Schulte each hit 3-pointers early in the overtime for WSC and the Wildcats took an 84-80 lead after Schulte went 1-of-2 at the foul line with 1:58 remaining.

MSU Moorhead’s Jacky Volkert hit a jumper to cut the lead to 84-82. Wayne State had turnovers on their next two possessions and Volkert hit a trey for the Dragons with :29 left to go in front 85-84. A missed Wildcat shot by Schulte with :14 left resulted in WSC fouling Volkert, who made 1-of-2 at the line to give the Dragons an 86-84 lead with 13.5 left in overtime.

Wayne State set up for the final shot and Schulte’s attempt from the right side of the circle was strong and the Dragons held on for the win.

Schulte poured in a game-high 28 points to lead Wayne State (14-6, 8-4 NSIC) in scoring, Paige Ballinger and Brittany Bongartz added 13 points each while Lowe and Larson each recorded 12 points. Cassidy Thorson had a big game for MSU Moorhead with 25 points, Jacky Volkert added 22 points and 10 assists while Drew Sannes scored 19 points and grabbed nine boards.

In men’s action, MSU Moorhead shot 57.6 percent for the game, making 34 of 59 shots, as the Dragons rolled past Wayne State College 90-66.

The game was tight early until a late Dragon scoring surge to end the first half gave control of the contest to MSU Moorhead.

Wayne State (10-10, 5-7 NSIC) opened with an early 7-2 lead, but the Dragons scored the next eight points to take a 10-7 advantage.

Wayne State’s final lead came at 16-14 on a Trevin Joseph 3-pointer at the 11:00 mark of the first half. The Wildcats were still within three at 28-25 following a Kendall Jacks three-point play with 4:28 to go in the half, but Moorhead scored the next 14 points and ended the half with a 45-30 lead.

Wayne State mounted an early comeback in the second half and got as close as eight at 49-41 four minutes into the second half following a Vance Janssen layup.

The Wildcats still trailed 58-48 at the 12:24 mark, but the host Dragons put the game out of reach with a 10-0 run over the next 2:11 to take a 68-48 advantage and the hot shooting MSU Moorhead club pulled away for the 24-point win.

Jacks led Wayne State with 14 points followed by Jordan Cornelius and Janssen with 12 each. Tanner Kretchman accounted for 25 points to lead MSU Moorhead. Travaun Coad added 21 points and 12 rebounds while Johnny Beeninga also scored 21 points.

The Wildcats return to Rice Auditorium next weekend to start a four-game home stand as the Wildcats host Winona State Friday and Upper Iowa on Saturday.
