Wildcat soccer drops overtime home opener

In a competition that took 102 minutes to decide, Augustana played spoiler to Wayne State’s home-opener and grabbed a game-winning goal in the second overtime in a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon to open NSIC play at the Wayne State Soccer Pitch.

The Vikings looked to capitalize on a quick start with four shots in the first 10 minutes of action, but goalkeeper Rachel Grisham answered the call, grabbing two saves and kept the Wildcats level early. The two sides were unable to grab an advantage in the first half as Augustana outshot Wayne State 6-3.

Wayne State came out in the second half with a flurry of opportunities off a Natalie Rech throw, capped by the first career goal for Rylie Wehner, as she scored four minutes into the second half.

Augustana found the equalizer in the 65th minute behind an Alexis Legg goal. Grisham made an outstretched save to deny a Morgan Kierstead attempt, but was unable to parry it far enough from danger as Legg pounced and made no mistake slotting it home. The Vikings out-shot the Wildcats 14-9 in regulation while Grisham collected eight saves in the opening 90 minutes.

Augustana recorded seven shots in the overtime period and ended the contest in the second overtime with Legg’s second goal of the game. After a scramble in the box that led to two Grisham saves, Grace Behm found Legg from the left side and Legg finished with composure to the side netting.

The Vikings had an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks and outshot the Wildcats 21-9 in the contest. Grisham finished the game one short of her career-high in saves with 11. Wehner led the Wildcats with two shots on goal while Carleigh Wilson, Megan Phillips and Rachel Fraser all recorded a shot on goal.

The Wildcats (0-3, 0-1 NSIC) will be at home again Friday afternoon, hosting Sioux Falls in a 3 p.m. contest at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
