Wheels fall off for Wayne at state softball
HASTINGS -- Wayne hung tough with Gretna until late in the game, as the Dragons took advantage of five Wayne errors to pull away with a 12-3 win in the opening round of the Class B State Softball Championships Wednesday at the Smith Softball Complex.
Wayne answered Gretna scores twice in the early going. After Gretna broke the ice with a two-run homer in the top of the first, Wayne back with an RBI single by Tori Kniesche and a Gretna error that allowed Annie Kniesche to score to tie the game at 2-2.
Gretna retook the lead with a run in the top of the third, but that lead was short-lived as Kennedy Maly hit a solo homer to center to make it a 3-3 game.
It stayed that way until the fifth, when Gretna took the for good on a two-out double. Wayne's defense came unglued in the sixth, and Gretna took advantage to score three more runs before adding five in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Maly had two hits and scored twice for the Blue Devils, while Tori Kniesche added two hits. She struck out 11 and walked seven in a losing effort.
All four of the higher seeds lost in Class B's opening round, meaning the Blue Devils will face top-seeded Elkhorn South in an 11:30 a.m. elimination game on Thursday.
