Wayne/Wakefield baseball drops road twinbill

The Wayne/Wakefield baseball team fell to 0-5 on the young season with a doubleheader loss in Wahoo on Saturday, falling to Wahoo/Raymond Central/Lincoln Lutheran 8-4 and 6-5.
Wayne/Wakefield jumped on top early in the opener, as Isaac Camarena scored on Justin Dean’s groundout to second base in the first, and Caden Korth scored on a Brennan O’Reilly groundout in the second to stake the locals to a 2-0 lead.
Wahoo scored two in third and four in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Wayne got two runs in the sixth on Zane Jackson’s single to center, scoring Camarena and O’Reilly, but that was as close as they’d get as Wahoo tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Jackson and Tyler Lutt each had two hits in the first game, and Camarena scored twice. Camarena was credited with the loss on the mound.
In the nightcap, Wayne came back from a 5-2 deficit, scoring three in the fourth to tie the game. The host team broke the tie in the fifth and held on for the doubleheader sweep.
Micah Sprouls scored Lutt with a single in the first and Dean brought home O’Reilly with a single in the third to pull Wayne/Wakefield within one at 3-2 before Wahoo scored two in the bottom of the third to make it 5-2.
In the fourth, O’Reilly had a two-run single that scored Tucker Nichols and Korth, and O’Reilly scored on Lutt’s double to left to tie the game at 5-5. Wahoo would break the tie in the fifth and Wayne/Wakefield was unable to mount a rally.
O’Reilly had three of Wayne/Wakefield’s nine hits in the nightcap and scored twice. Lutt and Dean each had two hits. Korth was credited with the loss, pitching 4 1/3 innings in relief of Lutt.
Wayne/Wakefield hosts Guardian Angels CC/Scribner-Snyder/West Point-Beemer in a 5 p.m. matchup on Monday at Hank Overin Field.
