Wayne stays undefeated with 9-1 win over O'Neill
In a game that saw both teams’ starting pitchers leave early due to injury, the top-ranked Wayne High softball team defeated O’Neill 9-1 in a five-inning matchup Tuesday at the Summer Sports Complex.
It was a good pitching matchup between Wayne’s Tori Kniesche and O’Neill’s Morgan Breiner, as both were able to silence the opposing offense early on.
Kniesche experienced some back pain and was replaced after three innings with freshman Kendall Dorey, while Breiner followed in the fifth inning after being hit in the arm by a line drive.
It was in the fifth when both teams did all the scoring, with O’Neill breaking the ice on a bloop double by Chloe Scott that brought home the first run of the game.
Wayne sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning and put up nine runs to end the game on the eight-run rule. A two-run single by Annie Kniesche scored Allison Claussen and Aliah Schulz, who was pinch-running for relief pitcher Kendall Dorey, to give Wayne the lead for good. An RBI double by Sidney Biggerstaff, two passed balls and a Kayla Fleming single that scored Josie Thompson highlighted the big inning. Fleming came home on a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Biggerstaff and Fleming each had two hits and Biggerstaff and Claussen both had doubles for the 5-0 Blue Devils. Annie Kniesche drove in two runs and Fleming scored twice.
Dorey got the win in relief of Kniesche, pitching two innings and striking out four while walking two and allowing two hits. Kniesche struck out five and gave up no hits in three innings to start the game.
In JV action, Wayne beat O’Neill 15-0 in three innings. Aliah Schulz scored three runs and Amara Hurlbert, Nikki Fertig and Taytum Sweetland each scored twice. Kendall Dorey struck out nine in three innings.
Wayne will play Lincoln Pius, North Platte and Columbus in the Lincoln Public Schools Classic on Saturday in Lincoln.
