Wayne State wrestlers finish third in Great Plains Conference meet
The Wayne State wrestling team finished third in a tight team race during the Great Plains Conference Championships held Saturday at Wayne State College.
The Wildcats finished 11 points behind conference champion Colorado State, which won the tournament with 85.5 points. Iowa State Wrestling Club was second with 80.5 points, followed by Wayne State with 74.5 points.
Wayne State had a pair of champions, as Alejandro Martinez (125) and Gerald Kenkel (174) claimed conference titles. In all, Wayne State had nine wrestlers finish in the top six of their respective weight classes.
Joining the two conference champions were runner-ups Levi Honeywell (141), Hunter Weiss (149), and Ethan Fitzler (157). Thirds went to Matthew Reeves (141) and Joe Giesselmann (285), Spencer Trout was fourth at 184 and Justin Boone Was fifth at 149.
Wayne State will wrestle in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association national tournament, set for March 8-10 in Allen, Texas.
