Wayne pitching stingy as Blue Devils win home tourney
Wayne had no troubles winning its home softball tournament Saturday at the Summer Sports Complex, beating Ponca, Twin River and Arlington on the strength of three no-hitters.
Junior Tori Kniesche struck out 36 battlers in 15 innings of work and the top-ranked Blue Devils did more than enough work at the plate to finish the day as tournament champions.
In the opener, Wayne dominated Ponca 12-0 in a game that ended in three innings with a three-run bomb by Sidney Biggerstaff, capping a seven-run third inning to give Wayne the win.
Annie Kniesche doubled and tripled, scoring three and driving in three runs. Abby Ankeny added a double and drove in two, anad Josie Thompson and Kayla Fleming each scored two runs.
Tori Kniesche struck out eight of the nine batters she faced, throwing 30 of her 45 pitches for strikes.
In the semifinals, Wayne got a run in the second and a two-run double by Maysn Dorey in the fourth for insurance in a 3-0 win over Twin River.
Kniesche was nearly flawless in the semifinal matchup, striking out 14 of the 18 outs and allowing only two hits and one hit batter to move Wayne to the finals.
In the championship game, Wayne won an exciting pitcher's battle with a 3-0 win over Arlington as Kniesche finished the day with her first perfect game of the season.
It was scoreless until the fifth when Biggerstaff's RBI double scored the first run of the game, and Anekny added an RBI single to score Biggerstaff for an insurance run. Wayne got another run in the sixth when Annie Kniesche singled home Dorey.
Tori Kniesche capped the day with a perfect game, striking out 14 of the 18 batters she faced to help Wayne improve to 4-0 on the season.
The Blue Devils host O'Neill on Tuesday at the Summer Sports Complex.
