Wayne nabs host site for Class B Seniors Legion state tournament
Nebraska’s “Boys of Summer” will be coming to Wayne later this year for the Class B American Legion Seniors state tournament.
Steve Lutt, president of the Wayne Baseball Association, told The Wayne Herald on Saturday that Wayne has been awarded one of the state tournament host sites for the coming 2018 summer season. Hank Overin Field will be the host site for the Class B Seniors tournament, which will run from Saturday, July 28 to Wednesday, Aug. 1.
“We’re absolutely very excited,” Lutt told The Wayne Herald Saturday evening after hearing from Bud Neel of American Legion Post 43 that Wayne was named as a host site. The announcement was made Saturday at a meeting of the state’s American Legion baseball committee in North Platte.
It is the first time since 2009 that Wayne has served as a host site for a state tournament. They hosted the Class B Seniors state tournament that year, and this will be second time Wayne has hosted an American Legion post-season tournament since Hank Overin Field was rebuilt following a 2014 summer storm that destroyed the grandstand and backstop.
“There is still some things we want to finish up there, but the efforts of the Rebuild Hank Committee and the City of Wayne are a huge reason why we’re hosting it,” Lutt said. “They were a big help in getting the ball park rebuilt.”
The Wayne Baseball Association and Wayne American Legion Post 43 will be working together to host the tournament, with Denny Lutt serving as the tournament director.
