Wayne Juniors headed for win before rain halts play
COLUMBUS — The Wayne American Legion Post 43 Juniors were on their way to a second win in the American Legion Class B Juniors state tournament Sunday, but will need to take a detour thanks to Mother Nature.
A persistent rain halted play Sunday evening at Pawnee Park with Columbus Lakeview batting in the top of the fourth and Wayne leading 15-2 after the Wayne Juniors batted around in the first and third innings to build the sizable advantage.
After Lakeview scored in the top of the first, Wayne went to work with 12 batters going to the plate and five coming home to score. Trevor DeBoer got things going with an RBI single, Brock Hopkins had a two-run single with the bases loaded and Victor Kniesche added an RBI single to help Wayne to the early lead.
Lakeview’s pitching struggled to find the strike zone in the next two innings and Wayne took advantage, putting up three runs in the second and seven more in the third as Lakeview issued 13 free passes in the first three innings.
Josh Lutt, who pitched two innings of relief in Saturday’s win over Ashland, pitched 3 1/3 solid innings before the rains came. Assistant coach Tegan Nissen said Tyrus Eischeid is expected to come on in relief when the game resumes Monday at 11 a.m.
The loser of the resumed game will come back to play Alliance at 4 p.m., while the winner moves on to a 7 p.m. matchup against Hickman.
