Wayne to host district softball as fall sites announced
Wayne High School will play host to a district softball meet for the first time in recent memory as the Nebraska School Activities Association announced host sites for district fall sport activities were announced.
Wayne will host the C-5 district softball tournament that includes teams from Boone Central/Newman Grove, Highway 91, Madison/Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, O’Neill, Pierce and Ponca. The tournament will run Thursday and Friday, Oct. 4-5 at the Wayne Summer Sports Complex.
Wayne was last scheduled to host district softball in 2013, but the tournament was moved to Wisner after a tornado destroyed the complex one week before the tournament.
Area teams competing in girls golf will play their district at the Norfolk Country Club, host site for the C-3 district tournament that is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 1. Wayne and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge will compete in that district, along with Ainsworth, Battle Creek, Crofton, Elkhorn Valley, Hartington Cedar Catholic, host Norfolk Catholic, O’Neill, Pierce, Plainview, Thurston County and West Holt.
Wayne’s cross country teams will participate in the C-2 district meet at Albion Country Club on Thursday, Oct. 11. Other teams competing include host Boone Central/Newman Grove, Columbus Lakeview, Columbus Scotus, Hartington-Newcastle, North Bend Central, O’Neill, Ord, Pierce, St. Paul and West Point-Beemer.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge and Winside cross country teams will compete in Class D, but those district assignments and host schools have yet to be announced. Also pending announcement are the subdistrict volleyball host sites for Wayne and Wakefield/Allen (C1-7), LCC (C2-7) and Winside (D2-4).
