Wayne hoops teams beat Stanton in jamboree games
The Wayne High boys and girls basketball teams prepared for this week’s season opener with wins over Stanton in the annual Hall of Fame Jamboree matchup Monday at Wayne High School.
In the girls game, Wayne posted a 58-33 win over the Lady Mustangs, breaking open the game in the second half after a tightly-contested first half.
The two teams played to a 13-13 tie after one period and Wayne led 23-22 at intermission, but came out strong in the second half and pulled away in the final period for the easy win, with nine of 10 players getting in the scorebook for the Blue Devils.
Ashton Boyer led a balanced Blue Devil attack with 12 points and Sarah Greenwald came off the bench to hit a trio of 3-pointers to finish with 11 points. Gabi Meyer and Molly Hoskins each had eight points, Frankie Klausen added seven, Jamie Gamble had six and Annie Kniesche, Jenna Trenhaile and Tori Kniesche each had two points.
Stanton was led by Hannah Heppner with 12 points, while Liz Christensen added eight, Jaiden Hartl added six, Jessi Brnadl had four and Tenna Beel had three.
In the boys game, Wayne built a 12-point halftime advantage and went on to a 52-34 win over the Mustnags.
Wayne outscored Stanton 17-9 in the second period to build a 32-20 halftime advantage and were never threatened after that, using a balanced attack to come away with the easy win.
Jack Evetovich led all scorers with 16 points while Mason Lee added 10 points. Also scoring were Shea Swetland and Tyler Gilliland with six points apiece, Marcus Fertig added five, Cody Rogers had four, Beau Bowers and Tyrus Eischeid each had two and Brennan O’Reilly had one.
Tanner Krusemark led Stanton with nine points and Beau Wilke added six. Brock Sieh, Marcus Spotanski and Sam Bates each had four, Cade Goger, Ben Wilke and Tayton Lierman each had two and Nate Arens put in one.
Wayne opens the season Thursday with a boys-girls doubleheader at South Sioux City before returning home for a boys-girls twinbill Friday against Battle Creek.
