Wayne girls’ season ends in subdistrict final
NORFOLK — The Wayne High girls’ postseason hopes came to an end Thursday in a 47-39 loss to Pierce in the C1-5 subdistrict final at Norfolk High School.
Wayne got out to an early 8-2 lead thanks to a basket by Gabi Meyer and a basket and 3-pointer by Kylie Hammer, but Pierce returned the favor over the last few minutes of the first half and the game was tied 10-10 after one period.
Pierce built an eight-point lead midway through the second period, but Wayne was able to cut the deficit to two on a three-point play by Hammer before Pierce scored late to take a 27-23 halftime advantage.
A 3-pointer by Meyer and a basket bay Hammer got the Blue Devils to within two at 30-28 midway through the third, but that was as close as Wayne could get as the Bluejays built the lead back up to six and Wayne never got closer than five points after that, ending their 17-9 season.
Hammer led all scorers with 23 points, Meyer added seven, Jenna Trenhaile had six and Jamie Gamble scored three. Trenhaile had 12 rebounds and two assists, Gamble had three assists and Hammer dished out two assists.
