Wayne falls in Mid State semifinals
Wayne won a five-set thriller over Pierce to open Mid State Conference tournament play in Norfolk before falling to top-seeded and undefeated Hartington Cedar Catholic in the semifinals.
Wayne let a two-set lead get away before rallying for a five-set win over Pierce on Monday, 29-27, 25-14, 18-25, 16-25, 15-9.
Wayne was down 24-17 in the opening set before rallying to take the first set, and used that momentum to build a big lead that carried them to an easy second-set win and a 2-0 advantage.
Pierce rallied, however, dominating the net in the third and fourth sets to force a winner-take-all fifth set between the fourth-seeded Bluejays and fifth-seeded Blue Devils. Wayne pulled away in the final set to take the win and move on to Tuesday’s semifinal against top-seeded and undefeated Hartington Cedar Catholic.
Lauren Pick had 16 kills, Kylie Hammer added 15, Emily Armstrong had eight and Shania Anderson put down seven for Wayne. Ashton Boyer added four kills as well. Allyson Avery had 22 assists and Erin O’Reilly added 19.
Defensively, Pick and Anderson each had three blocks. Hammer led the back row with 22 digs, Armstrong and Hailey Backer each had 15, Korrina Niemann had 11, Boyer had eight and O’Reilly had six.
On Tuesday, the Blue Devils battled Hartington Cedar Catholic tough in the first two sets, but the Trojans finished off Wayne in three sets, 25-19, 25-19, 25-11.
Pick had nine kills, Hammer added six, Armstrong had five, Boyer and Grone each had three and Anderson had two for Wayne. Avery had 21 assists, O’Reilly had four and Boyer had two. Defensively, Boyer had 13 digs, Armstrong had nine, Backer had seven, Hammer had six, Niemann had five and Pick had four.
Wayne plays Crofton in the consolation game Thursday at 6 p.m. at Norfolk Catholic.
