Top-ranked Blue Devil softball team debuts with 2-0 win over Blair
Tori Kniesche threw a one-hit shutout and the Wayne offense made the most of their five hits as the Lincoln Journal Star's Class C top-ranked Blue Devil softball team opened the 2018 season with a 2-0 win over preseason Class B No. 10 Blair Thursday at the Summer Sports Complex.
The Blue Devils got all they would need in the first inning when they loaded the bases with nobody out and Sidney Biggerstaff hit a sacrifice flly to score Masyn Dorey, who led off the inning with a single.
Wayne got an insurance run in the fifth, taking advantage of singles by Annie Kniesche, Biggerstaff and Abby Ankeny, who plated pinch-runner Nicole Fertig with the second run of the game.
That was enough for junior hurler Tori Kniesche, who gave up only a leadoff bloop single in the seventh and finished with 15 strikeouts and three walks for the 1-0 Blue Devils.
Annie Kniesche had two of Wayne’s five hits in the game, with Dorey, Biggerstaff and Ankeny picking up the other hits.
Wayne will host their annual softball tournament on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Summer Sports Complex.
