Sullivan sets school mark, WSC women get two provisionals
Wayne State junior Robert Sullivan set a new school record in the high jump and two Wayne State women throwers notched NCAA provisional marks in the South Dakota State Preseason Open on Friday at Aberdeen, S.D.
Sullivan placed second in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches to set a new school record and reach an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the opening meet of the season. The previous school record of 6-8 1/4 was shared by Joe Ortmeier (1981) and Sam Haase (2007). Sullivan also recorded a fourth-place finish in the long jump at 23-0 3/4.
The other NCAA provisional qualifying mark was achieved by senior Derek Lahm with a third place mark in the long jump at 23-8 1/4.
Brady Metz placed in a pair of events, taking third in the triple jump (46-10 1/4) and sixth in the long jump (22-4 1/4) while junior sprinter Clay Kramper took fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.21) and ninth in the 60-meter dash at 7.09 seconds.
Other top finishers for the Wildcats included Isaias Solorio fourth in the 5,000-meter run (16:33.80), Nathan Pearson sixth in the 800-meter run (2:02.11), Habib Jallow sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.53), Richard Sweeney ninth in the weight throw (52-8) and Brock Hegarty ninth in the mile run (4:41.79).
The Wildcat 1,600-meter relay team of Jallow, Preston Davis, Kyle Lowe and Brandon Marker recorded a ninth place finish with a time of 3:29.22.
In women’s action, throwers Michaela Dendinger and Tia Jones reached NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the shot put. Dendinger posted a second-place finish in the shot put with a top mark of 49-1 1/2, while Jones came in fifth at 44-3 1/4. Dendinger also hit another NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the weight throw, taking fourth in a strong Division I field of throwers at 61-6 1/4.
Freshman Hanna Lazure recorded a tie for fifth in the high jump, clearing 5-1, and Kim Lowman came in sixth in the mile run with a time of 5:52.76.
Wayne State will resume the 2018 indoor track and field season on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12-13, at the UNL Holiday Inn Invitational in Lincoln.
