STATE CROSS COUNTRY -- Wayne senior brings home medal
The third time was the charm for Wayne High senior Andrea Torres, as she brought home a 12th place medal from the State Cross Country Championships Friday at Kearney Country Club.
Torres was up near the front of the 95-runner Class C girls field throughout the race and finished the 5,000-meter run in 20:56.1 to earn a medal for the Blue Devils.
Both she and junior Gabi Meyer represented Wayne as individuals after running on state qualifying teams in 2015 and 2016. Meyer came home in 50th place in a time of 22:15.2.
The Winside boys made their first-ever team appearance in the Class D boys race, finishing 16th out of 18 teams with 219 points.
Dylan Brogren, who ran as an individual last year and finished 82nd, placed 44th out of 150 runners in a time of 18:34.4 to lead the Wildcats. Alex Carlson was 95th in 19:43.2, with teammate Carter Jensen just behind in 96th at 19:44.0, and JaShaun Vyborny placed 100th in 19:50.8. Also running were Toby Heinemann (127th, 21:00.1) and Lane Damme (138th, 22:03.6).
