STATE BOUND -- Wayne rebounds with 32-8 win at O'Neill to seal playoff spot
Win and you’re in — and Wayne is in.
The Blue Devils offense came up with some key plays and some well-managed drives to post a 32-8 win at O’Neill and cap a 6-3 regular season that has unofficially secured a playoff spot in the Class C-1 State Football Championships that start next week.
The Blue Devils got out to a 16-0 halftime advantage, taking the opening drive 75 yards in 10 plays and finishing it with a 33-yard run by Juan Vergara. Beau Bowers’ two-point run made it 8-0.
Wayne doubled the advantage on their next drive, with Bowers finding Mason Lee on a five-yard scoring strike to make it 16-0.
O’Neill scored late in the third period to make it a 16-8 game, but Wayne came right back with a 27-yard pass from Bowers to Lee to make it 24-8. They put it out of reach in the fourth quarter with a 15-play, eight-minute drive that ended with a one-yard sneak by Bowers to seal the win.
The official playoff seedings will be announced Saturday by the Nebraska School Activities Association.
