STATE BOUND -- Wayne High netters claim C1-8 district title

The Wayne High volleyball team punched their ticket to the state tournament Saturday with a 25-14 25-21, 22-25, 25-19 win over Mitchell to claim the C1-8 district title Saturday afternoon at Lexington High School.

The Blue Devils dominated play in the first two sets before Mitchell rode the hitting of UNLV basketball recruit Keyana Wilfred to a third-set win.

Wayne built an early lead and never let the Tigers get closer than three points. After five attempts on match point, junior Emily Armstrong finally got the winner past the Mitchell block to give the 25-9 Blue Devils the win and the district title.

Lauren Pick led three Blue Devils with 17 kills, Armstrong added 13 and Ashton Boyer put down 10. Kiara Krusemark had 24 assists and Allyson Avery added 21. Boyer and Krusemark each had three ace serves and Erin O’Reilly added two. Pick had 32 digs, Armstrong added 26 and Boyer picked up 12.

Wayne will play in the Class C-1 division of the state tournament beginning Thursday at Lincoln North Star High School.
