STATE BOUND -- Blue Devil bats blow up in district chapmionship
Wayne wasted no time taking control of the C-5 district softball championship game, pounding out 18 hits and hitting three home runs in a 19-0 win over Boone Central/Newman Grove to take the title Friday at the Summer Sports Complex.
The Blue Devils hit three home runs in the title game, starting with a two-run opposite-field blast by Annie Kniesche to highlight a four-run first inning.
Wayne exploded for seven runs in the second, including a three-run shot by Sidney Biggerstaff and a solo homer by Allison Claussen. Wayne added eight more in the third inning to end the game on the 12-run mercy rule and improve to 31-0 on the season.
Maysn Dorey was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and Kayla Fleming was 3-for-3 with three runs scored to lead the Blue Devil effort. Aliah Schulz also scored three runs and Claussen, Josie Thompson and Annie Kniesche each scored twice.
Tori Kniesche tossed a three-inning no-hitter, striking out the lineup on just 38 pitches.
Wayne will be the top seed for the Class C State Softball Championships, which begin Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Smith Softball Complex in Hastings.
