STATE BASKETBALL -- Wakefield falls to Centennial in C-2
Bad things happen in groups of three.
The Wakefield boys found that out the hard way in Thursday's finale of the Class C-2 bracket at the Nebraska State Boys Basketball Championships in Lincoln, as Centennial drained nine 3-pointers in the opening half and held off a fourth-quarter Trojan rally to come away with a 56-48 win at Lincoln Northeast High School.
Every time the Broncos scored in the first 16 minutes, it was worth three points. Their only basket inside the 3-point line -- a layup by Jackson Hirschfeld early in the second period -- included a foul by Solomon Peitz that Hirschfeld converted into a three-point play.
The Trojans trailed by 13 at intermission, but were able to battle back to within six points at 41-35 on two Esgar Godinez free throws with 6:35 to go. They got back to within six with :52 left on a 3-pointer by Gabe Peitz, but could not get any closer as the Trojans ended the season with a 20-4 record.
Justin Erb led the Trojans with 12 points and Esgar Godinez added 11. Solomon Peitz and Gabe Peitz each put in eight points, Blake Brown scored six and Dylan Harder added three.
