STATE BASEBALL — Wheels fall off late as Wayne drops tourney opener
Lincoln Lutheran scored seven of their eight runs in the final two innings, including a five-run seventh inning as Wayne committed three errors and dropped an 8-3 decision in their first game during the Nebraska American Legion Class B Seniors state tournament at Hank Overin field.
Lincoln Lutheran drew first blood in the opening inning when Colby Bliss led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Justin Hilton, but Wayne countered with a run of their own as Tyler Lutt led off with a double and scored on a Tucker Nichols single.
The game stayed tied until the fifth when Wayne took the lead. Mason Lee led off with a single and scored on an error, and Lutt came home on a sacrifice fly by Payten Gamble to give Wayne the 3-1 advantage.
Lincoln Lutheran countered with two in the sixth on an RBI single by Thomas Otte and an RBI double by Kasey Ohnoutka to tie the game at 3-3. Wayne’s defense fell apart in the seventh, and Lincoln Lutheran took advantage by using three miscues to score five runs and come away with the win.
Lutt had two hits and scored two runs for Wayne. Nichols also had two hits, Adam Bentjen had a double and Lee and Ryan Jaixen both had hits. Lutt was the losing pitcher.
Wayne plays a 1 p.m. losers bracket game on Sunday against Wahoo.
