Seniors head into postseason on losing skid
The Wayne American Legion Post 43 Seniors lost their seventh straight game to close out the regular season Tuesday, dropping an 8-5 decision to Norfolk in action at Hank Overin Field.
The two teams traded runs in the first inning, with Wayne’s coming on a one-out single by Payten Gamble that scored Tyler Lutt, who led off the inning with a single and advanced on a Tucker Nichols sacrifice bunt.
Norfolk put up two in the second to take the lead for good and led 8-1 before Wayne mounted a late comeback.
Wayne loaded the bases in the sixth and scored on a bases-loaded walk by Nichols, bringing home Ryan Jaixen. Wayne had a chance to do further damage, but Norfolk got out of the inning without any further damage.
In the seventh, Wayne made a last attempt and made things interesting. With two out, Beau Bowers and Jaixen walked and both scored on Mason Lee’s long triple to left center to make it 8-4. Lee followed them home on an RBI single by Lutt, and the game ended when Nichols smashed a line drive that was caught by the pitcher to give Norfolk the win.
Wayne outhit Norfolk 10-9, led by three-hit efforts from Lutt and Lee. Justin Dean added a pair of hits as well. Nichols took the loss, pitching 3 1/3 innings before Lee came on in relief and struck out three while allowing one hit and four walks in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Wayne takes a 12-10 record into Class B Area 5 action that begins Friday in West Point. The Seniors will face O’Neill in a 2 p.m. matchup.
