No. 9 Northern storms back, beats No. 21 Wildcats
NInth-ranked Northern State rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat No. 21 Wayne State Friday evening in a Northern Sun Conference showdown at Rice Auditorium, 16-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-12/ in Wayne.
Wayne State were in control in the first two sets, leading the first set from start to finish and hitting .310 with 16 kills, led by Erin Gross and Katie Stephens with four kills apiece. They continued that into the second set, with Gross and Jaci Brahmer each recording four kills to pace the Wildcats.
Northern State came out smoking in the third set and led 22-9 before Wayne State rallied to make a game of it. Gross had seven kills in the third set.
Wayne State led 13-8 in the fourth when Northern State rallied with seven straight points, taking the momentum on to the fourth-set win and rallying late in the fifth set to take the match.
Gross led Wayne State with a career-high 26 kills and a .328 attack percentage. Brahmer followed with 12 kills and five blocks for the Wildcats. Megan Gebhardt was credited with her third double-double of the season on 50 assists and 12 digs. Stephens accounted for a team-high 21 digs with Haley Kauth adding 13 and Hope Carter 11.
Wayne State (12-7, 6-4 NSIC) will be at home again Saturday, hosting MSU Moorhead in a 1 p.m. game at Rice Auditorium.
