Morningside rallies for 70-66 win over Wildcats
Morningside rallied from a 62-52 deficit with 4:34 remaining to upend Wayne State College 70-66 Friday in non-conference men’s basketball action at Rice Auditoiurm.
Wayne State built an 18-8 lead nine minutes into the game following a fast break dunk from junior Trevin Joseph.
The Wildcats pushed the lead to 16 at 29-13 with 7:32 to play in the first half, but Morningside made a late surge to end the first half and knocked a 15-point deficit down to four at the half, 36-32.
Wayne State made 5-of-6 3-pointers against Morningside’s zone defense to open the second half, building a 51-40 lead with 15:36 remaining after a Joseph trey. The Wildcats pushed the lead to 14 several times and led 61-47 with 7:20 remaining.
Wayne State led 62-50 with 5:09 to go, but Morningside went on a 12-0 run and forced the game’s first tie at 62-62. Wayne State’s final lead came at 63-62 after Kendall Jacks hit one of two at the charity stripe.
The Mustangs scored the next six points and took a 68-63 lead with :44 to play. A Vance Janssen 3-point play got the Wildcats within two at 68-66 with :36 left, but could get no closer as the Wildcats missed three shots in the final seconds before the Mustangs got the rebound and hit two late free throws to seal the deal.
Janssen led Wayne State in scoring with 17 points followed by Joseph with 13 and Jacks 11. Alex Borchers scored 16 points for Morningside with Zach Imig and Tyler Borchers also reaching double figures with 15 and 13, respectively.
The Wildcats (8-5) conclude the pre-holiday schedule on Tuesday with an NSIC contest at Augustana University starting at 8 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D.
