Late run helps Wright State beat Wayne State in men's exhibition

Wright State of Ohio used a 16-5 scoring run in the last 8:47 to pull away for a 73-58 men’s college basketball exhibition win Friday evening over Wayne State College at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.

The first half was close as neither team held a lead of more than five points.

The host Raiders scored the first five points of the contest for their biggest lead of the half.

With Wayne State down 9-5, the Wildcats took their first lead of the night at 15-14 on an Austin Esters layup with 13:17 to go in the half. Wayne State pushed the lead to four at 21-17 following a Jordan Cornelius layup with 9:57 to go in the half.

Wright State then went on an 11-2 run and took another five-point lead at 28-23 with 6:33 to play first half.

With Wayne State still trailing 36-32 at the 2:50 mark, the WIldcats used a Kendall Jacks basket and a 3-pointer from junior reserve Trevin Joseph to lead 37-36 before finishing the half trailing 40-39.

The two teams traded several lead changes early in the second half until the Raiders pulled away late for the win.

Down 43-39, Wayne State got a 3-pointer from Jacks and a pair of free throws from sophomore center Tony Bonner to regain the lead at 44-43 with 16:01 to play. A layup by Bonner gave the Wildcats its final lead at 48-47 with 14:08 to go in the contest.

Wright State scored the next seven points to take the lead for good at 54-48. A Cornelius basket at the 9:49 mark ended a scoring drought of 4:19 to get Wayne State within four at 54-50, but that’s as close as they would get as Wright State used the 16-5 run late to finish off the win.

Cornelius led the Wildcats in scoring with 12 points followed by Bonner with 10 and Jacks nine. Cornelius and Austin Esters led Wayne State with four caroms each.

Justin Mitchell paced Wright State with 23 points and 12 rebounds followed by Mark Hughes with 21 points. Loudon Love also had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Wildcats officially open the 2017-18 season next Friday, Nov. 10, when they visit Nebraska-Kearney in a 7 p.m. contest.
