Juniors' comeback train keeps rolling
WAHOO — The Wayne American Legion Post 43 Juniors cranked out 12 hits and kept their postseason hopes alive with a 7-3 win over Columbus Lakeview Monday in the Class B Area 5 tournament at Sam Crawford Field.
The win moved the 17-4 Juniors into Tuesday’s final against Lincoln Lutheran, who beat the Juniors 4-2 on Saturday. Wayne will have to beat Lincoln Lutheran twice on Tuesday to earn a trip to next weekend’s state tournament in Columbus.
Wayne took control of the game early with a four-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Trevor DeBoer. Gunnar Jorgensen had an RBI single and Blake Bartos added a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-0 game.
DeBoer picked up his third RBI of the game in the second with a two-out single to center, scoring Hagar Miller, who reached with a double. Two more runs came home in the fifth on RBI doubles by Bartos and Victor Kniesche.
Lakeview got a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to keep hope alive, but Wayne held off the comeback effort to finish off the win and move on to Tuesday’s final.
DeBoer had three hits, two of them doubles, and three RBI’s to lead the Wayne effort. Jorgensen and Bartos each had two hits, Bartos had two RBI and Miller scored two runs. Josh Lutt threw 6 1/3 innings of six-hit baseball, striking out three and walking five before Tyrus Eischeid closed the game out for the Wayne Juniors.
Wayne and Lincoln Lutheran will square off for the title Tuesday at 5 p.m. A Wayne win will force a winner-take-all game 30 minutes after the end of the first game.
