Wayne teams play in semifinals

Wayne and Hartington Cedar Catholic will square off for both titles in the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout after semifinal wins Friday.

The Blue Devil girls got 14 points from Kylie Hammer and 12 from Frankie Klausen to post a 46-30 win over Arlington to earn a matchup against the Trojans, who 15 points from Anna Reifenrath in a 53-45 win over Norfolk Catholic.

In boys action, Jack Evetovich led four Blue Devils in double figures with 21 points to help Wayne to a 60-48 win over Arlington. Cedar Catholic had to survive a last-second 3-point attempt to earn a 48-46 win over West Point-Beemer and advance to Saturday's finals.

The LCC boys came back from a 15-point halftime defict to beat Gordon-Rushville 54-49 to advance to the fifth-place game. The Lady Bears fell to Gordon-Rushville 51-40 and will play for seventh place on Saturday morning.

Girls Bracket

West Point-Beemer 46, Pender 44 — Free throws by Katie Pilakowski and Sidney Swanson proved to be the difference in a close matchup. Brittney Hinkel had 12 points and Megan Groth added 11 to lead a balanced West Point-Beemer attack. Ashley Ostrand scored a game-high 23 points in a losing effort for the Pendragons.

Gordon-Rushville 51, LCC 40 — Gordon-Rushville pulled away in the fourth quarter to come away with a consolation win. Jacobie Knight scored a game-high 24 points to pace the Mustangs with Sierra Garrett adding 12 points. Makayla Forsberg scored 14 points and Bryn Schutte added 12 for the Lady Bears.

Hartington CC 53, Norfolk Catholic 45 — Hartington Cedar Catholic jumped out to a 12-0 lead early in the game and Norfolk Catholic never got closer than six in the second half as the Trojans advanced to  Saturday’s finals. Anna Reifenrath led the Lady Trojans with 15 points and Mallorie Steffen added 10. Hanna Neesen led Norfolk Catholic with 10 points while Drue Pieper and Anna Kassemeier each had nine.

Wayne 46, Arlington 30 — Wayne pulled away in the second half to advance to Saturday’s championship game. Kylie Hammer had a game-high 14 points and Frankie Klausen added 12 for the Blue Devils. Maggie Schmidt led a balanced Arlington attack with eight points, while Shelby Kaub and Jaidyn Spoon had six apiece.

Norfolk Catholic 62, Pender 41 — Norfolk Catholic bounced back from a first-round loss with a dominating performance. Andrew Fleecs scored 14 points and Ethan Piper added 12 for the Knights. Pender’s Sam Mallioux led all scorers with 19 points.

LCC 54, Gordon-Rushville 49 — The Bears roared back from a 15-point halftime deficit and hung on for a win over Gordon-Rushville. Ty Erwin hit five 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 17 points to lead LCC, while Izac Reifenrath added 16 and Noah Schutte put in 12. Dylan Schwarting led the Mustangs with 17 points and Jared Nelson added nine.

Hartington CC 48, West Point-Beemer 46 — West Point-Beemer almost erased a 16-point first-quarter deficit and had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but a 3-pointer fell short and the Trojans moved on to the finals. Riley Arnes scored 15 points and Matthew Becker added 13 for the winners. Blake Anderson scored a game-high 19 points and Austin Streeter added eight for the Cadets.

Wayne 60, Arlington 48 — A strong second half and a balanced scoring attack helped the host Blue Devils advance to the finals. Jack Evetovich had 21 points to lead four Blue Devils in double figures. Shea Sweetland added 12, Mason Lee had 12 and Ryan Jaixen scored 11. Arlington’s Jackson Borgmann led all scorers with 25 points, while Landon Walkenhorst added 14.
