Dendinger win highlights WSC effort at UNL Invite

Wayne State College senior thrower Michaela Dendinger won the weight throw and placed second in the shot put with the top mark this season in NCAA Div. II to highlight the Wayne State indoor track and field teams' efforts Saturday in the Nebraska Graduate Classic in Lincoln at the Devaney Sports Center Track.

Dendinger recorded a first-place finish in the weight throw on Friday with a top mark of 62 feet, 6 3/4 inches, which is now tied for the third-best mark in NCAA Div. II. She came back Saturday and posted a second-place finish in the shot put at 51-8 1/4, which is now the top mark in NCAA Div. II this season. Both marks for Dendinger were NCAA provisional qualifying throws.

Other Wayne State women with top 10 finishes were Tia Jones taking sixth in the shot put at 42-10 3/4 while Morgan Shearer tied for 10th in the high jump clearing 5-1.

In men's competition, senior Antoine Bardou recorded a team-best second place finish in the 1,000-meter run to lead the Wayne State men, posting a time of 2:31.35.

Senior Brady Metz finished sixth in the triple jump (46-11 1/2) and was 12th in the long jump (21-9 1/2). Richard Sweeney placed seventh in the weight throw (51-10) with  Dylan Kaup right behind in eighth at 51-9 3/4. 

Nathan Pearson placed 11th in the 800-meter run (2:02.07) while freshman Brock Hegarty was 11th in the mile run with a time of 4:37.87. The Wildcat distance medley relay team of Bardou, Jediah Davis, Pearson and Hegarty came in sixth  with a time of 10:31.15. 

Wayne State will compete at the South Dakota State Div. II Invitational in Brookings, S.D., on Friday starting at 2 p.m.
