Blue Devils bounce back with big win at O'Neill
Wayne used a solid defense in the second half and pulled away for a 34-14 win over O'Neill in action Friday at O'Neill High School.
The Blue Devils made some mistakes offensively in the first half but held a 10-8 lead over the Eagles at the half. They added to that lead late in the third quarter when Tyler Gilliland lobbed a pass toward the end zone that Shea Sweetland brought down over a defender's reach for a 14-yard score. Blake Bartos ran in the two-point conversion to make it 18-8 going to the fourth.
Wayne put it away down the stretch with two scoring runs by Bartos. Gilliland found Marcus Fertig for a 51-yard pass to set up a 6-yard run by Bartos, and on the next drive the Blue Devils drove down and got the final yard on a Bartos dive to put the game out of reach.
Gilliland was 10-of-12 passing for 191 yards and a touchdown to help the Blue Devils improve to 1-1 on the year. The Wayne defense was once again solid, limiting the Eagles to 181 yards in total offense.
The Blue Devils are back home next Friday to face Arlington in a 7 p.m. matchup at Wayne State College.
