Blue Devil wrestlers claim runner-up trophy at conference

Wayne High geared up for next week's district meet with nine medalists and a runner-up finish in Saturday's Mid State Conference tournament at Norfolk Catholic High School.

The Blue Devils had three wrestlers finish as runner-ups in their respective weight classes, as Juan Vergara (132), Victor Kniesche (138) and Hunter Jorgensen (220) all came away with silver medals.

In consolation action, Cameron Muhs won an all-Wayne matchup with Brandon Wacker at 126 pounds for third-place honors. Casey Koenig got a second-period pin at 170 pounds, and Mike Leatherdale won an exciting match, getting a two-point nearfall as time ran out in regulation and then painning his opponent in overtime for consolation honors at 285 pounds.

Berto Vergara and Daniel Maxson rounded out the Wayne effort with fourth-place medals at 160 and 195 pounds, respectively.

Wayne will compete in the B-3 district meet Friday and Saturday at Fort Calhoun. The top four individuals in each weight class advance to the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships in Omaha, Feb. 15-17.
