Blue Devil girls move to 6-2 with 58-44 win
Wayne closed out the pre-holiday schedule Monday with a 58-44 win over Guardian Angels Central Catholic to improve to 6-2 on the season.
The game was close throughout the first half as neither team was able to build a big lead. The Bluejays took their biggest lead of the game at seven points late in the first half at 27-20, but the Blue Devils came back with a flurry to end the half. Ashton Boyer hit a 3-pointer and Gabi Meyer followed with a trey and a basket to make it a one-point game. Boyer missed on a 3-pointer in the corner, but followed her own shot and scored as time ran out to give the Blue Devils a 30-29 advantage at intermission.
The Blue Devils continued that momentum in the third period. Baskets by Kylie Hammer and Frankie Klausen and a trey by Boyer made it 41-33, and after the Bluejays cut it to four, Klausen hit a late trey to make it 44-37 going to the fourth quarter.
The Bluejays got within three points at 44-41 early in the fourth quarter, but Wayne went on an 8-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Klausen, to make it 52-42 and closed out the win.
Hammer scored a game-high 23 points for the Blue Devils, with Meyer adding 15, Boyer putting in 13 and Klausen scoring seven.
Wayne closes the pre-holiday schedule Friday at Lutheran High Northeast.
