Blue Devil boys debut with road win
The Wayne High boys basketball team kicked off the season with a 59-49 win at South Sioux City on Thursday evening.
The Blue Devils trailed 6-3 early in the game, but a 3-pointer by Tyler Gilliland and a basket by Jack Evetovich gave Wayne an 8-6 advantage and they never trailed the rest of the way.
Two Evetovich baskets made it 12-8 after one period, and Marcus Fertig hit a 3-pointer to make it 15-8. Another trey by Fertig gave Wayne its biggest lead of the half at 20-11 and they took a 24-17 advantage into the locker room.
South Sioux City would get within four points on two occasions in the third, but Wayne closed the period with a 6-0 run, thanks to baskets by Evetovich and Beau Bowers and two Shea Sweetland free throws, to take a 38-28 lead into the final period.
South Sioux got within three late in the game, but the Blue Devils hit 11-of-18 free throws in the final period to hold off the Cardinal comeback and come away with the win.
Evetovich scored 16 points and Fertig added 14 for the winners, while Sweetland and Mason Lee each added nine, Tyler Gilliland had seven and Bowers had four. Sweetland had seven rebounds and Lee had six to lead the defense, while Lee had three assists and Evetovich, Sweetland and Fertig each had two.
The 1-0 Blue Devils host Battle Creek in action on Friday.
