AREA WRESTLING -- Teams compete in weekend tourneys
Highlights from area wrestling action at tournaments this weekend:
Wayne medals four at Neligh — The Wayne High wrestlers tied for sixth in the 24-team Neligh-Oakdale Invitational and came away with four medals on the day. Hunter Jorgensen went 4-0 and won the 220-pound title with four first-period pins. Cameron Muhs (126) and Berto Vergara (160) both earned third-place medals and Reece Jaqua finished fourth at 120 pounds. Wayne wrestles at Winside on Tuesday.
Winside finishes seventh at Oakland-Craig — The Winside wrestlers earned six medals and placed seven out of 18 teams at the Oakland-Craig Invitational. Jonathan Escalante led the Wildcats effort with a first-place finish at 220 pounds, while Koby Ellis was second at 113 pounds. Carter Jensen finished third at 120 pounds, Michael Jensen was fourth at 182, Alex Carlson placed fifth at 132 and Matthew Frederick finished sixth at 126 pounds. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge had one medalist with Ethan Williams placing fourth at 285 pounds. Winside hosts Wayne on Tuesday, while LCC goes to a triangular at Randolph.
Trojans place fourth at Madison — The Wakefield wrestlers finished fourth in the Madison Invitational on Friday evening. The Trojans placed seven in the meet, with Isaac Verzani taking first at 145 pounds and Cesar Sandoval (120) and Noah Lamprecht (195) finished second. Charlie Lopez was fourth at 126, Julio Sanchez was fourth at 220, Ben Chase placed fifth at 138 and Juan Lopez was sixth at 152. Wakefield wrestles in a triangular Thursday at Hartington Cedar Catholic.
