AREA VOLLEYBALL -- Wayne nips Battle Creek in five-set thriller
Here are Thursday’s area volleyball highlights:
Wayne takes Battle Creek in home finale — Wayne and Battle Creek hooked up in a wild showdown of Mid State Confernce schools Thursday at Wayne High, with the Blue Devils coming out on top in a five-set thriller, 12-25, 31-29, 26-28, 25-19, 15-13. Lauren Pick led three Blue Devils in double figures in kills with 16, while Emily Armstrong added 13 and Kylie Hammer added 12. Shania Anderson had nine kills and Ashton Boyer had eight kills and three ace serves. Allyson Avery had 27 assists and Erin O’Reilly put up 16. Defensively, Anderson had four blocks, Avery had three and Boyer had two. Hammer had 20 digs, Hailey Backer added 16, Boyer had 13, Armstrong had 12 and Korrina Niemann had 10. Wayne plays a triangular Tuesday at O'Neill and closes out the regular season on Thursday at Lutheran High Northeast.
Winside takes Allen in three sets — Winside and Allen hooked up in action Thursday at Allen High School, with the visitors coming out on top 25-22, 28-26, 25-20. For Winside, Andi Bargstadt had 12 kills and six blocks, Fauneil Olander added 11 kills and two ace serves, Alyssa Brogren had six kills, Kati Topp added five and Hope Cummins had four kills and three blocks. Brooklyn Behmer had 18 assists and Sarah Wolfe added 15. Bargstadt led the defense with 17 digs, Brogren and Olander each had 16, Wolfe had 14 and Haylee Cummins had 10. For Allen, Desi Martell had 13 kills, Summer Jackson added nine, Bri Hingst had seven and Haley Stapleton had four. Cassidy Thomas had 31 assists and Carly Dickens added three. Hingst led the defense with 23 digs, Stapleton had 20, Dickens had 19 and Jackson and Martell both had 10.
