Ruth Johnson

    Ruth Johnson, 97, of Wayne, formerly of Battle Creek, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017 at her home at Brookdale-Wayne.
    Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. at Calvary Bible Evangelical Free Church in Wayne. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Calvary Bible Evangelical Free Church in Wayne with family present.
    Burial with military rites will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne.
    Memorials may be directed to the Johnson family for later designation.
    Arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home in Wayne.
    Ruth Louisa Johnson was born Oct. 3, 1920 in Wayne to Herman and Anna (Lund) Lundberg. She graduated from Wayne High School and Nebraska State Teachers College where she was inducted into Cardinal Key before teaching math in Crofton. Ruth enjoyed lifeguarding and teaching canoeing at a Girl Scout camp. A devoted musician, she played clarinet in the college band and city band as well as violin, piano and organ. During World War II, Ruth served with the U.S. Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). Later she worked at State National Bank for several years. On March 29, 1947 Ruth married John Russell Johnson at her parents' home in Wayne. Afterward they enjoyed a honeymoon trip to Colorado. This was the first of what would become decades of traveling they enjoyed together across six continents. Favorite destinations included Alaska, Hawaii, California, Canada, Egypt, Australia and New Zealand, Israel, Scandinavia, Greece, Philippines, Turkey, Europe and even China.
    The couple first made their home on a farm near Emerson with their dog, Cruce. They farmed together near Wayne for more than 30 years before retiring to an acreage south of Battle Creek in 1979. They returned to Wayne in June of 2017. Ruth was an avid gardener and loved flowers of all kinds. She also enjoyed her grandchildren and enjoyed attending their activities, taking them on trips and shopping excursions and helping them with homework. Ruth was a member of Community Bible Church in Norfolk.
    Survivors include her husband, Russell; their children, Bruce (Yleen) Johnson of Wayne, Elaine (Bud) Lingenfelter of Norfolk, and Carl (Peggy) Johnson of Wayne; 11 grandchildren, Glenn Johnson, Cena (Harley) Lerseth, Lee Johnson, Kevin (Michelle) Lingenfelter, Kory (Kyley) Lingenfelter, Kristin (Micah) Van Maanen, Kyle (Katie) Lingenfelter, Beth (James) Romer, Renae Johnson-Brenner, Jennifer Johnson and Rachel Johnson; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.
