Robert Eugene Bodenstedt was born June 15, 1929, at their rural farm home near Carroll, to George and Edna (Sorensen) Bodenstedt. Bob was the eldest of his siblings and was his Dad’s right hand man on the third generation family farm. He attended District 80 school in Wayne County, and graduated from Carroll High School in 1946. He was proud of his record of perfect attendance. He joined the Nebraska National Guard, and served in the great Missouri River floods of the early 1950’s. He met his bride-to- be, Marilyn Swanson, in Winside. They were married in Wayne on May 25, 1952. They began married life in a small home built by Bob’s Dad on the family farm north of Carroll. Bob farmed with his Dad, raising corn, beans, oats, alfalfa, cattle, hogs and chickens. Marilyn taught school in rural Wayne County until their children, Debra and Steven, were born. They eventually moved to their own farm where Bob and Marilyn added dairy cattle to the routine. Life as a dairy farmer was demanding daily. But Bob made sure the family had fun with short family vacations and outings to stock car races and fishing ponds. Bob and Marilyn left the farm in 1972, and moved to Wayne where they still lived. Bob worked for the State of Nebraska Department of Roads as a highway maintenance supervisor for 24 years before retiring in 1996. In his retirement, Bob enjoyed gardening, where his bountiful crops of tomatoes, peppers, squash and carrots were anxiously awaited by family and friends! He also loved camping, fishing, tinkering on cars, traveling and visiting family. He was never happier than when he was driving a tractor on a farm. He really looked forward to harvest time when he could haul corn and beans from the fields. He was extremely proud of his children and his granddaughter, Lindsay. His buttons burst with pride when he talked of Lindsay being a nurse. He was so looking forward to her wedding this July. Bob was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne and American Legion Post 43 in Wayne.
