Wildcats split Saturday baseball doubleheader
Freshman Aaron Ras pitched four hit, two-run ball over five innings and sophomore designated hitter Bryce Bisenius went 4-for-4 with two RBI to lead Wayne State College in a 12-2 win over Newman University of Kansas Saturday afternoon in the second game of a non-conference baseball doubleheader played in Wichita, Kan.
Wayne State took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the first game, but the host Jets used a six-run second and seven-run third inning and used 10 walks from Wildcat pitchers along with two hit batters and three errors to erupt for a 21-3 win in the opener.
The Wildcats scored two in the first on a Tanner Simons run-scoring single to bring home Jake Lorenzini, with Simons scoring on a Rob Ramsey single up the middle. Sophomore catcher Jake Lemar added a solo homer in the second to put the Wildcats in front 3-0.
The Jets took control of the game from then on. Newman connected for two homers and scored six runs in the second for a 6-3 lead, and put the game away with seven runs in the third on just two hits, taking advantage of four Wildcat walks, one hit batter and one error.
The second game saw the Wildcats use strong pitching from Ras and a 15-hit attack to post their first win of the season over the Jets.
Miller belted a triple in the second that scored Kyle Thompson (single) for a 1-0 lead, and the Wildcats scored two more in the third as Bisenius and Hanson both scored on a wild pitch to put Wayne State in front 3-0.
After going hitless in the first three innings, the Jets got to Ras in the fourth for two runs on three hits to trim the Wildcat lead to 3-2. But Wayne State gave Ras plenty of run support to follow, scoring four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take commanding 9-2 advantage.
In the fifth, Thompson produced a two-run single while Bisenius had an RBI double with David Janes adding an RBI single. The sixth inning saw Bisenius produce an RBI single that scored Zitek, with Janes scoring on a Newman fielding error. Wayne State added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a Tanner Simons three-run homer to finish off the win and gain the split.
The Wildcats had 15 hits in the second game while holding Newman to just five. Bisenius was 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Simons was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI while Thompson finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Miller was 2-for-3 with a triple while Janes finished 2-for-4.
Ras (1-1) earned the pitching win, allowing just two runs on four hits in five innings of work with five strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Isaac Rubendall worked the final two innings and gave up just one hit with two walks.
