Blue Devils dominate Crofton to advance to fifth-place game
The Wayne High boys scored the game’s first 25 points and cruised to a 65-25 win over Crofton in the consolation semifinals of the Mid State Conference tournament Friday at Norfolk Catholic High School.
The Blue Devils ran out to a 22-0 first-quarter lead over the Warriors, forcing seven turnovers and holding Crofton to 0-for-11 shooting in the opening frame. Jack Evetovich scored seven points and Mason Lee added six in the period to stake Wayne to the big lead.
Shea Sweetland opened the second period with a 3-pointer to make it 25-0 before Crofton finally got on the board with a free throw. Wayne still led 33-12 at the break and went on a 30-7 run in the second half to lead by as many as 44 points on their way to the easy win.
Evetovich led three Blue Devils in double figures with 16 points, Sweetland added 14 and Lee put in 10. Also scoring were Cody Rogers and Tyrus Eischeid with six points apiece, Trevor DeBoer put in four, Tyler Gilliland had three and Beau Bowers, Ryan Jaixen and Marcus Fertig each had two.
Rogers led the team with seven rebounds, Lee had four assists and Bowers gave up three, and Lee and Sweetland each had three steals as Wayne improved to 11-10 on the season.
Wayne will play Hartington Cedar Catholic for fifth place on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Northeast Community College.
