Wayne boys bow out in first round of conference
A 26-6 first-half run helped Battle Creek send the Wayne High boys to the consolation bracket of the Mid State Conference tournament after a 60-49 defeat Tuesday at Norfolk Catholic High School.
The Blue Devils got off to a good start in their efforts to avenge an opening-week loss to the Braves. Jack Evetovich scored early and Lee added a basket and a three-point play to stake Wayne to an early 7-0 lead.
Lee scored off a steal to make it a 9-2 game, but the Braves battled back to tie the game, countering a 3-pointer by Shea Sweetland with six consecutive points to close the quarter with a 12-12 deadlock.
Wayne’s offense went sour in the second period, as the Blue Devils were 0-for-9 from the field and committed five turnovers. Marcus Fertig went 1-for-2 at the line and Evetovich made two charity tosses to account for Wayne’s only points of the period as Battle Creek took a 28-15 halftime advantage.
Battle Creek continued to extend their advantage, leading by as many as 20 points early in the final period before Wayne tried to rally. An 8-0 run, capped by a Ryan Jaixen 3-pointer, made it 47-35 with six minutes to go, and the Blue Devils eventually got the deficit to as little as eight points with three minutes left after Sweetland hit a trey to make it 51-43.
Battle Creek was able to rebuild the lead to 14 points, however, and held on for the 11-point win to send Wayne to Friday’s 6:15 p.m. consolation game against Crofton.
Sweetland paced the 10-10 Blue Devils with 17 points, Lee added 14 and Evetovich scored 12. Jaixen added five points and Fertig put in a free throw.
Lee led the team with six rebounds and Sweetland had four. Jaixen put up three assists and Lee had five steals.
