Wayne boys hang on for win at Norfolk Catholic
The Wayne High boys basketball team grinded out a 49-40 win at Norfolk Catholic on Friday to improve to 5-6 on the season.
The Knights jumped out to an 11-2 lead late in the first period, but the Blue Devils chipped away at the early deficit, getting within three at 13-10 on a 3-pointer by Marcus Fertig.
Wayne tied the game at 15-15 on a trey by Jack Evetovich, and got a basket and a three-point play by Mason Lee to break a 19-19 and take the lead for good at 24-19 late in the first half.
Wayne continued to hold off the Knights in the second half, taking their biggest lead late in the third on a 3-pointer by Shea Sweetland to make it 36-25. They would extend that advantage to as many as 13 points in the final period before finishing off the nine-point victory.
Evetovich scored a game-high 18 points and Lee added 15 for the Blue Devils. Also scoring were Sweetland with six, Fertig and Ryan Jaixen with four apiece, and Beau Bowers with two.
Evetovich led the defense with seven rebounds while Bowers and Lee each had five and Sweetland and Cody Rogers had four apiece. Lee added three steals.
Wayne is back in action with a game against Boone Central/Newman Grove Saturday at Newman Grove High School. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
