Blue Devil teams bounce back with home wins

The Wayne High basketball teams rebounded from Friday’s losses at Wahoo to earn wins on their home floor Saturday against Columbus Lakeview.

In the girls game, Wayne came away with a 56-51 win over the Vikings.

Lakeview jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the game and led 17-7 after one period. The visitors continued to control the game in the second quarter, leading by 16 at the half and getting the first basket of the second half to take a 33-15 advantage.

Wayne began chipping away at the lead, cutting the deficit to four points late in the third period on a basket by Jamie Gamble. They caught fire in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 37-37 on another shot by Gamble, and the two teams went back and forth until Wayne broke a 42-42 tie with two Molly Hoskins free throws, a Frankie Klausen 3-pointer and a basket by Gabi Meyer to make it 49-42. Wayne would add five more points on two free throws and a 3-pointer by Kylie Hammer and held on for the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Hammer scored a game-high 21 points to lead three Blue Devils in double figures. Klausen added 13 points and Hoskins put in 10. Boyer had six points, Gamble had four and Meyer had two.

On the boys side, Shea Sweetland hit 5-of-8 from 3-point range and scored a game-high 20 points to help the Blue Devils improve to 2-3 with a 59-51 win over Lakeview.

Sweetland hit four of his five treys in the opening period and Marcus Fertig also drained a three-point bomb to stake the Blue Devils to a 24-10 advantage after one period.

Lakeview would cut the margin to six by halftime, and were within three points on four separate occasions in the second half before Wayne would come back to keep the Vikings from getting any closer.

Sweetland’s 20 points led all scorers while Mason Lee added 17 points and Jack Evetovich put in 14. Fertig added five points and Tyrus Eischeid scored three.

Both Wayne teams are back in action next week with home games Friday against Wisner-Pilger and Saturday against O’Neill.
