Buzzer beater sinks Wildcats in loss to Missouri Southern

Missouri Southern’s Braelon Walker made a layup with 0.8 seconds to play giving the Lions a 79-77 victory over Wayne State Sunday evening at the Sanford Pentagon Showcase in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The game was tightly contested throughout with neither team holding a lead of more than five points until 4:24 left in the contest. The two teams exchanged 15 ties and 10 lead changes in the contest.

Missouri Southern took its biggest lead of the first half at 23-18 with 9:15 to play, but the Wildcats went on a 13-3 run over the next 4:20 and took their biggest lead of the first half at 31-26 following a Kendall Jacks 3-point play with 4:55 to play before halftime.

Wayne State still held a 36-32 lead at the 1:36 mark of the first half before the Lions tied the game at 36-36 heading into halftime.

The contest remained close until Missouri Southern used a late scoring surge to take its biggest lead of the game, 72-64 with 1:55 to play. Wayne State held a 62-60 lead after a Jacks jumper with 6:48 to go before the Lions went on a 10-0 run over the next 3:11 to take a 70-62 lead with 3:37 to play.

Trailing 72-64 with 1:55 remaining, the Wildcats rallied and tied the game at 77-77 on a Trevin Joseph 3-pointer with 5.3 seconds to play. But Missouri Southern’s Walker drove the length of the floor and made a running layup from the left side of the basket with 0.8 seconds remaining to give Missouri Southern the two-point win.

Jacks led Wayne State in scoring with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 at the free throw line. Vance Janssen contributed 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting while Trevin Joseph and Austin Esters also hit double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Kinzer Lambert paced Missouri Southern with 22 points with Elyjah Clark adding 19. Enis Memic also hit double digits with 12 points.

MSSU held a 35-24 advantage in rebounding over WSC thanks to nine boards from Lambert while Jacks grabbed five caroms for the Wildcats. Janssen and Joseph each had two assists for the Wildcats while Janssen and Matt Thomas were both credited with two steals.

Wayne State (4-2, 1-0 NSIC) returns to Northern Sun Conference play next weekend with road trips to Minnesota State Friday at 8 p.m. and Concordia-St. Paul Saturday at 6 p.m.
