Turnovers hurt Wildcat women in overtime loss to Augie

Augustana forced 29 turnovers on Wayne State, resulting in a 35-8 advantage in points off turnovers, as the visiting Vikings held off the Wildcats 83-78 in overtime Monday in the Northern Sun Conference women’s basketball opener for both teams at Rice Auditorium.

The game featured 15 ties and 16 lead changes after Augustana scored the opening 10 points om tje first 3:48 of the game. Wayne State answered with a nine-point run of their own and led 13-12 after the first period.

The second quarter featured five ties and seven lead changes. Wayne State held a 20-16 lead at the 7:50 mark following a Maggie Schulte jumper, but the Vikings rallied to take a 33-31 lead at intermission.

The Wildcats built an eight-point lead late in the third quarter at 52-44 following a Paige Ballinger free throw with 1:23 to play in the quarter and finished with a 55-50 lead after three.

Augustana scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to take a 57-55 lead and neither team led by more than two points with Ballinger making a layup with :25 to play in regulation for the game’s 14th tie, sending the game into overtime tied at 69-69.

After Augustana took the lead in overtime on a Presley O’Farrell 3-pointer for a 72-69 lead, Wayne State scored the next five points on a Kacie O’Connor layup and 3-pointer to take their only lead at 74-72. The Vikings scored eight straight points to take the lead for good at 80-75. The Wildcats got as close as three at 81-78 on a Ballinger three-point play, but the Vikings sealed the win with a Presly O’Farrell basket.

Ballinger led Wayne State with 22 points followed by O’Connor with 14 and Erin Norling 11. Logan O’Farrell led Augustana with 21 points and 11 rebounds followed by Paige Peterson with 20 off the bench. Presley O’Farrell and Shelby Selland added 15 and 14 points respectively.

Wayne State outrebounded Augustana 45-40 with Maggie Schulte grabbing 10 boards for the Wildcats. Norling had four of Wayne State’s 13 assists and two of the team’s six blocks.

The Wildcats (4-3, 0-1 NSIC) return to non-conference play Friday, hosting Peru State in a 5 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.
