Blue Devils come up short in C1-4 district volleyball final
WEST POINT -- The Wayne High volleyball team played state-rated North Bend Central tough, but couldn't stop the Tigers in the end as they dropped a 25-17, 25-22, 25-17 decision in the C1-4 district finals Saturday afternoon at West Point-Beemer High School.
Wayne bounced back from a slow start in the opening set, scoring four straight points to tie the game at 12-12 on a Shania Anderson block. Anderson delivered a kill to tie the gaem again at 13-13, but North Bend scored three straight and used the momentum to come away with the first-set win.
Wayne took its first lead in the second set after a North Bend error and a kill by Anderson, and led again at 10-9 after a three-point run that included an Ashton Boyer kill and an ace serve by Kylie Hammer. The set went back and forth with Wayne tying the set at 17-17 on a kill by Anderson, but North Bend went on a 4-1 run to take the lead for good and claim the two-set advantage.
In the final set, Wayne got out to the early 6-1 lead on a kill by Emily Armstrong and a series of North Bend errors, but the TIgers came back to take a 10-9 lead before Wayne bounced back with a four-point run, highlighted by an ace serve by Korrina Niemann to make it a 13-10 Wayne advantage. North Bend scored five of the next seven points to tie the set at 15-15, then scored the next four points to take the lead for good and come away with the win to advance to next week's state tournament in Lincoln.
Lauren Pick had nine kills, Anderson added seven and Hammer had four to lead the Wayne attack. Allyson Avery added two kills and Boyer had one. Avery had 15 assists, O'Reilly had eight and Hammer had three. Pick had three ace serves and Hammer and Niemann both had two.
Defensively, Anderson had three blocks in the match. Armstrong had 11 digs, Hammer and Boyer each had six, Niemann and Hailey Backer had four apiece and Pick had three.
Wayne ends the season with a 19-13 record.
