BREAKING NEWS — Wayne volleyball wins subdistrict
The Wayne High volleyball team swept Pierce in straight sets, 25-15, 25-19, 25-20 to win the C1-7 subdistrict title Tuesday at Norfolk High School.
The Blue Devils raced to a 15-1 lead in the opening set and never let the Bluejays get back in the match. Wayne continued to roll in the second set, building a 20-15 lead and finishing off the set with a Kylie Hammer kill to take the 2-0 advantage.
Pierce put up more of a fight in the third set and led 10-6, but kills by Hammer and Emily Armstrong got Wayne back in the set, Ashton Boyer tied the match at 11-11 with a kill and Korinna Niemann served back-to-back aces to give Wayne the lead for good at 13-11.
Pierce got within a point at 20-19, but the Blue Devils closed out the match with a couple of Pierce errors and a Boyer kill to post their fourth win of the season over the Bluejays.
Wayne will take a 19-12 record into Saturday’s substate match against a team yet to be determined. Times and locations of the matchups will be announced by the Nebraska School Activities Association on Wednesday.
