No. 17 WInona handles No. 20 Wayne State in four sets

No. 17 Winona State defeated 20th-ranked Wayne State 22-25, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21 in a Northern Sun Conference showdown Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.

The Wildcats came away with the first set thanks to a balanced attack while forcing seven Winona State attack errors. With the score tied at 21, Wayne State got kills from Tarrin Beller and Alyssa Ballenger to take a 23-21 lead. Following a Winona State kill, the Wildcats closed the set with kills from Jaci Brahmer and Ballenger to capture the first set.

Winona State got the hot hand attacking in the second set with a .421 percentage to tie the match at a set apiece. With Wayne State trailing 17-15, Winona State reeled off five straight points to take control of the set and come away with the win, then carried that momentum into a fast start that led to a third-set win. The Warriors jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the third and Wayne State never got closer than four points after that. Freshman Ali Timmermans led WSC in the set with four kills on seven attacks.

Wayne State trailed for much of the final set, but rallied to tie the score at 20-20 before the visiting Warriors finished the set scoring five of the final six points to take the match. Brahmer led Wayne State in the final set with four kills while sophomore Morgan Alexander had a team-high seven digs with one service ace.

Sophomore Katie Stephens led Wayne State with 14 kills and 13 digs. Brahmer added 10 kills and five blocks. Maddie Duffy had two service aces and Megan Gebhardt had 26 assists.

On defense, Haley Kauth accounted for 24 digs with sophomore reserve Morgan Alexander credited with 13 digs and 12 set assists.

Wayne State (15-10, 8-7 NSIC) is on the road Tuesday evening for an NSIC contest at No. 15 Augustana starting at 6 p.m.
