Wildcat women’s soccer team wins home finale

Wayne State’s Rachel Fraser scored the lone goal of the game in the ninth minute on a wind-aided corner kick to give the Wildcats a 1-0 win over Southwest Minnesota State Friday in Northern Sun Conference women’s soccer played at the WSC Soccer Pitch.

The Wildcats took the wind in the first half and on a corner kick in the ninth minute Fraser lofted a ball that angled into the net over SMSU goalkeeper Jenna Meyer. That proved to be the only goal of the match, as Wayne State held off a late Mustang rally in the final five minutes as SMSU had two corner kicks that were knocked away by Wildcat goalkeeper Rachel Grisham to preserve the win.

Wayne State finished the contest with a 18-8 advantage in shots and 9-2 in shots on goal over SMSU. Wayne State held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks while both teams were called for seven fouls.

Fraser scored her first goal of the season in the win. Rylie Wehner had five shots (three on goal) followed by Christina Stasi with four shots (three on goal). Goalkeeper Rachel Grisham recorded her third shutout of the season with two saves.

Wayne State (4-8-5, 3-7-4 NSIC) will close out the season on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest at Sioux Falls.
